Nottingham is one of the oldest established cities in England as it dates back to pre-Saxon times. Famous for Robin Hood and Sherwood forest Nottingham has a lot more to it than you would imagine combining both the traditional and modern sides of England.

Many tourists visit Nottingham every year and the tourist information available about What’s On in the city centre is good.

These are a few of our favourite things to do and places to go to in and around the city if you are staying in one of the many great hotels or hostels in Nottingham.

Nottingham Castle

It is said to have been home to the Sheriff of Nottingham, Robin Hood’s mortal enemy. The Castle is situated atop a hill with fantastic views of Nottingham. It was actually originally built by William the Conqueror’s son in 1608 and has since then been through a few makeovers. The castle has a magnificent history linked to kings, conquerors and more than a few scandals; it still has many of its secret caves and tunnels underground that one can take a look at.

Nottingham’s Caves

Known as the city of caves, Nottingham still has a network of caves underneath the city that have been used for thousands of years as cellars and during the two wars as bomb shelters. Nottingham has the most underground caves in all of Britain, for years they were used as shelters for homeless people.

Southwell Minster

The cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham and has been around since as far back as the Saxon times. The Minster is a fine example of Norman architecture as well it also possesses a Saxon carving, Roman ruins and the famous chapter room full of intricate carvings. The Cathedral offers an audio tour of the interior and exterior of the building giving you a clearer idea of its history as well as expose visitors to some of the aspects of the Cathedral and its history that they might have missed before.
