Canterbury is a historic city made famous by Kings & Queens, Religion and Chaucer with his historic works, The Canterbury Tales. If you are planning on visiting Canterbury why not stay in a hostel and use the money you are saving on hotel rooms by taking in some of the following things to do in Canterbury as recommended by Leading Hostels.
Canterbury Cathedral
Founded in 597 AD This truly is a remarkable Cathedral and a trip to Canterbury would be nothing without visiting the historic holy place. It is both the mother Church of the Anglican community and the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury making it quite an important religious landmark. The Cathedral is one of the most visited places in the country and has been for centuries with both Pilgrims and visitors arriving daily to experience one of the greatest holy places in Great Britain.
The Cathedral is still very much a living place of worship with each day starting with morning prayers and ending with evening prayers it is open all year round for those who are interested in worship there or simply to have a look around.
St Augustine’s Abbey
Once the burial ground for Anglo-Saxon kings, St Augustine’s along with Canterbury Cathedral and St Martin’s Church together make the world heritage site; it is actually a ruined Monastery built in 598 AD by Augustine, a Roman Abbot sent by the pope to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. The old monastery was a pivotal part of the spread of Christianity throughout Britain. Today guided tours and audio tours are offered to visitors.
St Martin’s Church
It is Britain’s oldest Parish Church and was the private chapel of Queen Bertha of Kent in the 6th Century. It also has a very musical history right from the days of the Augustine Monks to the present day with a mass on the first Sunday of every month with a Renaissance mass sung by a quartet of singers. It is a fascinating building to visit and like St Augustine’s Abbey has an important part in British religious history.
